tl;dr: Especially as a first ship, Avenger Titan and Aurora MR are recommended over Mustang Alpha.

It mainly depends on your budget which ship you start with, both are great starter ships

Below are the silhouettes of the 3 most common launch packages. I’ve added information below to help you choose your starting ship, so you can get the ship that suits you best right away (hopefully).

Also, you can upgrade your ship later, e.g. you can start with an Aurora MR and later upgrade to a bigger or faster ship (e.g. Avenger Titan / Anvil Arrow / Cutlass Black) 

If you wait until the next Sale (probably in November) to upgrade, you can get a longer “insurance” for your ship. However, this insurance is not relevant until Star Citizen is released.

The Aurora MR is a civilian-produced single-seat spacecraft with a length of 18 m, a width of 8 m, and a height of 4 m. It has no cargo capacity, but boxes and other small items can be carried inside. The Aurora MR has a bed that can be used on long-term missions.

The Aurora MR is well suited for delivery, reconnaissance, and simple mercenary missions at the beginning of the game.

The Mustang Alpha is a single-seat civilian spacecraft sold by Consolidated Outland. The ship has a length of 21.5 m, a width of 18 m and a height of 9 m, making it significantly larger (and easier to hit) than the Aurora MR.
On the other hand, the Mustang Alpha has a cargo capacity of 6 SCU.

In the early game, the Mustang Alpha is suitable for reconnaissance and mercenary missions. But don’t forget to put your helmet on before you get out of the pilot’s seat.

The Avenger Titan is also a single-seat spacecraft with a length of 22.5m, a width of 16.5m and a height of 5.5m.
The Avenger Titan combines advantages and disadvantages of the other two ships, it has cargo capacity of 8 SCU and also a bed that can be used for long-term missions.

The Avenger Titan is well suited for deliveries, reconnaissance missions and simple mercenary missions at the beginning of the game.
